An Update from Lizard CATCH
Lizard CATCH – Community, Arts, Theatre, Culture & Heritage is a new charity set up by a group of Lizard residents. Initially formed to explore saving the Lizard Chapel as an arts & heritage space but also to respond to local expressions of interest in holding more activities and cultural events in the village.
The fundraising campaign attracted lots of support and generous contributions from both locals and further afield, but the sums raised proved insufficient to purchase and repair the building, and the chapel is now being purchased by a private buyer.
The group of villagers that were leading the efforts are still keen to explore whether the charity should continue to support these aims within the community, without owning a specific building. This could take the form of organising specific events/activities not currently running at The Lizard or giving financial/practical support for those arranged by other groups. It would seek to add to the cultural life of the village by holding events that were suggested in their residents’ survey and public meeting that was held last year.
Some ideas that came from those discussions were:
- Performances from visiting theatre/music groups
- Events for younger residents
- Art exhibitions
- Cornish language and heritage events
- Mental health and wellbeing support events
Before moving forward, the charity will of course be contacting crowdfunding donors to outline the plans and offer to return their funds if they prefer.
